“1874” Shield Two Cents – Production Blog
All are over-struck on genuine US Mint copper Shield Two
Cents (circa 1864-1873).
The last year for the minting of Shield
Two Cents pieces was 1873. None were originally dated 1874.
However, an 1874 two-cents revenue stamp featured an image of the obverse and
reverse of an “1874” Two Cents piece.
This revenue stamp is listed in the Scott Specialized Catalog of United States
stamps, catalog number RN-O1.
All of the over-strikes show a “small motto” (In God We Trust) that is similar to the scarce small-motto variety of 1864.
NOTE: These are NOT endorsed by the US Treasury. Defacing of US coins is legal so long as the defacement isn't for fraudulent purposes.
