“1886-O” Trade – Production Blog

Trade Dollars were originally minted from 1873 to 1885 at the Philadelphia, San Francisco, and Carson City Mints. Mintages decreased drastically in later years. In the final year (1885) only five were produced (Philadelphia Mint proofs only). None were ever minted with an “1886” date or “O” mint mark.

NOTE: These are NOT endorsed by the US Treasury. Defacing of US coins is legal so long as the defacement isn't for fraudulent purposes.

First produced November, 2023.

All are over-struck on 90% silver US Mint Trade Dollars
that were minted from 1873 to 1878.

Five were struck with a Brilliant Satin finish before the dies were polished.
Two of those five were double-struck with secondary strikes off-center,
with antiqued/circulated finish. Two more (proof-like, bulk-handled)
also have double-strikes.

Later strikes from the proof-like dies developed a satin appearance somewhat similar to the pre-polish strikes.

One (proof-like, high-grade) was struck on a Trade Dollar with vintage
“chop marks”. Those marks still show after the over-striking.

Two (bulk-handled) were struck off-center on clipped copper blanks.
Both have “COPPER” counter-stamped above the “O” mint mark,
and both have multiple 3.5mm “DC” counter-stamps (not released).
