“1837-O (Gobrecht)”, “1853-O (Arrows & Rays)”, “1874-S”, “1874-CC” Fantasy Seated Liberty Dollars – Production Blog

The Seated Liberty dollar was first produced as the rare “Gobrecht” type (without obverse stars and with a Flying Eagle reverse) in 1836, 1838, and 1839. None were produced in 1837. None of the Gobrecht type ever had any mint mark. No Seated Liberty Dollars (of any type) ever had an obverse mint mark.

Seated Liberty Quarters and Halfs were produced in 1853 with arrows at date and rays on reverse. Seated Liberty Dollars were produced in 1853, but none of those had arrows or rays, or any mint mark.

The last year for Seated Liberty Dollar production was 1873. None were dated 1874 or after. The 1873-S Seated Liberty Dollar is an enigmatic coin. US Mint records indicate that 700 were minted, but none are known to exist as of 2022.

NOTE: These are NOT endorsed by the US Treasury. Defacing of US coins is legal so long as the defacement isn't for fraudulent purposes.

First produced July, 2022.

Over-struck on 90% silver Seated Liberty Dollars of 1840-1873.

Normal reeded edge. Without “MM” counter-stamp mark.

Early strikes have a cameo semi-proof finish.

One (not released) was struck (in error) with medal-turn orientation.
Some were over-struck with additional over-strikes off-center.

Three were multi-over-struck using the “1874” obverse die and both the “CC” and “S” reverse dies.

After 41 “CC” strikes and 29 “S” strikes, the obverse die failed (warped under load). The 4 “CC” and 4 “S” over-strikes done after that show the obverse warped across the upper middle. All of the warped-die over-strikes were multi-struck. All warped-die over-strikes are high-grade.
A replacement “1874” obverse die was then produced and 12 more “1874-S” strikes were done.
The replacement die is indistinguishable from the previous (pre-warp) die.

* Price for this option is $350 plus an original Seated Liberty Silver Dollar to strike over
($400 if hole needs to be plugged).
