“1964-D”, “1948-DC proof-like” Franklin Silver Half Dollars – Production Blog

All are over-struck on genuine US Mint Franklin silver half dollars (circa 1948-1963), unless otherwise noted.
Some were broad-struck and/or multiply struck with moderate shift between strikes.

The first year that proof Franklin Half Dollars were produced was 1950. No proof or proof-like Franklin Half Dollars were originally produced in 1948 or 1949. No Franklin Half Dollars originally had a “DC” mint mark.

The 1964 Franklin silver half dollar is a coin that almost was. The US Mint performed preliminary preparations to mint 1964 Franklin half dollars. But due to the assassination of President Kennedy, no 1964-dated Franklin coins were actually minted (1964 Kennedy half dollars were produced instead).

NOTE: These are NOT endorsed by the US Treasury. Defacing of US coins is legal so long as the defacement isn't for fraudulent purposes.
