 “1848 CAL” , “1908-O” Liberty-Head Gold $20 Double Eagle – Production Blog

The first year for the Double Eagle ($20) coin was 1849. Only a couple are known to exist. Regular production started in 1850 and ran until 1907. In 1848 the US Mint sourced some newly-discovered gold from California and used it to make 1848 quarter-eagle ($2.50) gold coins at the Philadelphia Mint. Those few coins were subsequently counter-stamped “CAL.” at the Philadelphia Mint. Some people consider those to be the first American commemorative coins. No other coins ever had a mint-applied “CAL.” mark.

The last year that a New Orleans “O” mint mark appeared on a Double Eagle was 1879. No Liberty-Head Double Eagles were produced after 1907.
