“1937-S”, “1942-dDd”, “2004-W”, “2005-W” Jefferson Nickels – Production Blog

 

All are over-struck on genuine US Mint Jefferson nickels.
A few were broad-struck and/or multiply struck with moderate shift between strikes.

 

1937-S” (Die Pair 4):

Over-struck on Jefferson Nickels of 1938-1941 and 1946-2003.
Jefferson nickels were originally minted starting in 1938.

 

1942-dDd” (3 mint marks) (Die Pair 3):

Over-struck on Jefferson Nickels of 1942-P, 1942-S, and 1943-1945 (silver-alloy war-time composition).
Obverse "d" mint mark near the date similar to 1968 to present issues. Large "D" mint mark above Monticello similar to 1943-1945 issues. And a small "d" mint mark at right of Monticello similar to 1938-1942 and 1946-1964 issues.
No 1942-D Jefferson Nickels were produced in the silver composition, or with a large "D" mint mark. No Jefferson Nickels ever had more than one mint mark.

 

2004-W” (Die Pair 2):

Over-struck on Jefferson Nickels of 2005-2020.

Offset side-facing portrait type of 2005.

No offset side-facing Jefferson Nickels were produced before or after 2005. No Jefferson Nickels had a "W" mint mark prior to 2020.
Those struck over 2005-dated coins have the reverse design changed from "Ocean in View" to Monticello, or from "American Bison" to Monticello. Those struck over 2006-2020 coins have the obverse design changed from the offset front-facing portrait to the offset side-facing portrait.

 

2005-W” (Die Pair 1):

Over-struck on Jefferson Nickels of 2006-2020.

Offset front-facing portrait type of 2006.

No front-facing Jefferson Nickels were produced before 2006. No Jefferson Nickels had a "W" mint mark prior to 2020.
