“1995” Fantasy Over-Struck Morgan Dollars – Production Blog

All are over-struck on genuine (circa 1878-1921) US Mint Morgan Silver Dollars.

The 1895-[P] (Philadelphia) Morgan Dollar is known as the key (rarest) date in the Morgan Dollar series. Surviving examples are known only as a proof issue of 880 pieces, although US Mint records indicate that 12,000 non-proof (“business strike”) 1895 Morgan Dollars were also minted. The non-proof version is unknown to exist at present.

Since “1895” is not a “fantasy-date” Morgan Dollar (1895-dated coins are known from Philadelphia, New Orleans, and San Francisco), this over-strike utilizes a “1995” date as a tribute to the original non-proof 1895 issue.

NOTE: These are NOT endorsed by the US Treasury. Defacing of US coins is legal so long as the defacement isn't for fraudulent purposes.
