“1907” and “1915” Fantasy Mexico Caballito “Horse” Pesos – Production Blog

The original design for this coin came from the French sculptor Charles Pillet. The first minting of the design was some pattern 50-Centavos coins dated 1907 (one 50-Centavos dated 1908 is also known). The full Peso size coins with this design were only minted from 1910 to 1914 (as well as a sole pattern coin dated 1908 and 36 pattern coins dated 1909). Pillet was apparently unhappy with the final product since it did not measure up to the quality of his original sculpt. More information can be found in the book “Mexican Beauty – Un Peso Caballito” by Alan Schein, who consulted on this project. These over-strikes correct the deficiencies in the original coins via increased detail, higher relief, and full [over]-strikes. All are struck over Caballito silver pesos originally minted from 1910 to 1913.

NOTE: These are NOT endorsed by the US Treasury or Mexico. Defacing of US coins is legal so long as the defacement isn't for fraudulent purposes.

First produced August, 2019. All are struck over Caballito silver pesos originally minted from 1910 to 1913. About 27 grams each.

The first 3 were over-struck in a tight collar resulting in a satiny-matte appearance.

These show faint, if any, original edge lettering.

23 were broad-struck to some degree, resulting in strong “cartwheel” mint luster.

Most of these show complete original edge lettering. 21 have a similar appearance but
have better strikes and less ghosting near the rim, and they have no trace of edge lettering.
