“1805” Fantasy Over-Struck Draped Bust – Production Blog

No US silver dollars were minted with dates 1805 to 1835. The 1804 Draped Bust Silver Dollars are renowned for their rarity and are prized by collectors. This over-strike is a “what if ?” piece showing what could have been had the US Mint continued minting dollars with this design after the “1804” issue.

NOTE: These are NOT endorsed by the US Treasury. Defacing of US coins is legal so long as the defacement isn't for fraudulent purposes.

All are over-struck on US Mint silver dollars as follows:

(5) on Eisenhower dollars (.400 silver, not released);

(6) on Silver Eagle Dollars (.999 fine silver, not released);

(226) on Morgan, Peace, and modern commemorative Dollars (.900 fine silver).
One of the (226) was over-struck in error with medal-turn orientation.

Although flattened, the original edge reeding of the host coin will show on the edge to a varying degree. There is no edge lettering, unlike the original Bust Dollars which had lettering on the edge.

Most show some amount of strike doubling.

The last circulated examples produced (approximately 20 pieces) were “circulated” using
a different process than the previous production. The latter process resulted in surfaces
that were less scuffy and slightly burnished in appearance.

The olive branch on the reverse at lower right is smaller than normal so as to be roughly symmetrical in size with the opposing arrows in the other talon. The Eagle’s tail is also short, allowing space for the added legend along the lower rim:
“STRUCK ON A USA SILVER DOLLAR”.

First produced August, 2019.

All are broad-struck on US Mint Draped Bust Silver Dollars minted from 1798 to 1803.

As such, they still show the original edge lettering of the host coins.

Some have multiple-overstrikes with lateral shift and/or rotation between strikes.

Large olive branch at lower left on reverse, like the originals.

* NOTE:

$300 plus the host coin to over-strike if the coin does NOT need a hole plugged.

$475 plus the host coin to over-strike on if the host coin needs a hole plugged
(or re-plugged) with silver.

Either way, the same coin sent is returned after the over-striking.
